What is counseling? What is a counselor's role?

  • Counseling (therapy, psychotherapy) is a service carried out by a licensed mental health professional. Clients usually attend counseling to recovery from past traumas, hurts, relationships, experiences, etc. They may seek counseling if they are feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, anxious, or depressed. The counselor's role is to guide, witness, and accompany you in your healing process.

How do I know if I need counseling?

  • You're here, you're curious, you're researching, and you haven't left yet! Seems like you may be on the right track. Most clients seeking therapy are looking to overcome an internal obstacle or recover from an emotional wound.

How do I make an appointment?

  • You will need to contact me directly via phone, email, text, or messenger to set up a consultation call. This is an opportunity to ask questions and interview each other- you deserve to work with a counselor that is a good fit for you and your needs!

What if we aren't a good fit?

  • If counselor or client determine the relationship is not a good fit, referrals will be made based on clients needs.

How long does counseling take?

  • On average, my clients show marked improvement at around 8 weeks. Some highly motivated clients may need less time, others need more.

Is counseling expensive?

  • I bill insurance at a rate of $140/hr. Most insurance providers cover in-office and telecounseling services. Depending on your provider and plan, you may or may not have a deductible and/or co-pay that needs to be met. I also offer a flat out-of-pocket fee of $75/hr for uninsured / underinsured clients. Some counselors offer services on a sliding-fee scale.

What do I bring to my first session?

  • Be sure to bring your picture ID and insurance card if you are choosing to utilize benefits. If you are paying out-of-pocket be sure you have method of payment on hand.

What can I expect the first session?

  • The first 1-2 sessions is about building a relationship. You may be asked what brought you to counseling, whether you have had therapy in the past (what you liked, didn't like), if you are taking medications, etc. You will also need to fill out the intake paperwork if you haven't done so prior to our meeting.

How long are counseling sessions?

  • Sessions are booked in 60-minute blocks 1x per week, bi-weekly, 1x per 3 weeks, and/or monthly.. This is your time and you may use it as you wish. Insurance companies do not generally cover more than 1 session per week.

Is what I say in counseling confidential?

  • Yes with exceptions. You will be provided with a privacy policy prior to signing a services contract so that you can make an informed decision and understand what limitations there are to confidentiality.
